NILES Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed a new texting ban into law with a lot of fanfare. She appeared on Oprah Friday — part of the host’s No Phone Zone effort. Michigan is the 24th state to outlaw texting and driving.

Call me pessimistic, but I don’t think Oprah Winfrey’s “No Phone Zone” — a push to stop texting and talking on cell phones while driving — is going to work. Cars dashboards are a distraction magnet. Taking phones out of the equation is only a small part of the battle.

Oprah Winfrey and General Motors are adding their voices to the growing chorus against cell-phone use while driving. The queen of daytime talk was to host on Friday a Fort Wayne, Texas, activist, Diveeta Johnson, who lost her 18-year-old son, Rodney, after he lost control of a car while texting. Johnson has since persuaded 7,000 students to take a pledge not to text behind the wheel.
